Why Film?

Why in this digital age would anybody choose to photograph with film? A couple of reasons:

Film is not perfect. Rather than electronics, micro-chips and bunches of 0′s and 1′s film is a real. Plastic, emulsion, and tiny specs of metals and chemicals. There’s something inherantly more artistic feeling about using film. For me it’s more like painting something with oil  paints versus painting on a computer with a mouse.

A wedding is a “real” event. Call me a romantic but I feel like there is something special about capturing an event on a “real” artist medium.  A film photograph somehow is more than just a bunch of pixels representing the likeness of a person, place or event.

At every wedding I shoot several rolls of film. Along with plenty of digital images too.  See examples of some film images below.

Below is enlargment of a film negative.  Notice the grain. Imperfections similar to an impressionist painting. This gives a warmth and softness that digital simply cannot duplicate.
